This is Planning Commissioner (and City Council candidate) Mark Bixby speaking at the HB City Council meeting April 21st, 2014 regarding the Plastic Bag Ban, here he voiced his opinion that HB should continue to ban plastic bags and deny the citizens of HB a voice and vote in the matter. In my opinion he would be a terrible choice for City Council as I find him to be an environmental zealot and would take us in a far worse direction than even Connie Boardman and Joe Shaw. Probably the most distressing is that he, at the same moment, wants to deny your right to vote and yet wants your vote to get in office. Here are some quotes and paraphrases, I think he employs some poor logic in his argumentation but you be the judge, my thoughts in parentheses: "The bag ban is justified by driving down PCH on a windy afternoon, they are plastered into the fence and blowing into the Wetlands" (So, seeing a plastic bag at the beach is proof that the bag ban is a good idea ? I think it proves the opposite, that after 6 months it is NOT working as intended) "the Truth is plain for anybody to see who CHOOSES to see" (What "truth is that ?) "You in the public had 8 chances to participate but you chose not to" (true, people, including me, were not as active as we should have been but we hadn't actually seen what having the ban in place would be like, similar to Obamacare) "No new information has been brought forward tonight" (other than many valid opinions of HB Citizens and actual working data on what having the ban is place is like) "since only 1000 signatures have been collected it's not the "Big Burning Issue" that the supporters of repeal make it out to be and apparently the People have decided and said it's not so bad" (a number of Councilmen spoke at length on the near impossibility to succeed in a signature campaign) "I've been to the Leadership Academy and been told that clean beaches are key to marketing the city therefore the bag ban is key to future economic growth and activity" "The argument that banning the bag ban does not clean up all pollution is specious, just because you can't achieve perfection doesn't mean you shouldn't make it better" (this is the unending excuse of the Progressive....WE have to do SOMETHING!!) "At some point you need policy finality and there is no need to put this to a vote" (when WE want it to be final...we won't be so generous when it's something YOU want)
